Over this past week I have had so many ideas flying around my head that I have been confused as to what I should actually do in my performance.

The conclusion: Nothing. The whole performance is going to be based around audience interaction; they will be in control. I decided that I wanted the audience to be physically active in the performance to gain a deeper connection with the piece. I feel that people ignore how forceful the beauty industry is and how much of an affect it can actually have on people.

I am hoping this installation performance will open my audience’s eyes to see the ugly side of beauty. The piece will be split into two sections, one being the performance, the other an exhibition.

I also want the performance to be streamed onto the televisions in the LPAC foyer

1.61803398875 … This is what is known as the Golden Ratio. It is an irrational number similar to that of pi. Dr Stephen Marquardt has medical scientific proof that beauty is not subject to one particular race or culture. With the help of phi, he has been able to produce a mask using the pentagon and decagon as the foundation.

 

I will use the outline of the Marquardt mask for my exhibition to show another level of beauty and how far the obsession of beauty has gone.  This will be positioned after the beauty quotes and just before the magazine section to signify the bridge between the real and the fake.

Video looking at the pressures we face from society

Beauty pressures:

 

This video clearly explains what I have previously spoken about. It is now common knowledge that the beauty industry is so large and so fierce that the influences it can have on young people, particularly girls, can lead to a negativity about their looks and appearance. This video is unmistakably exposing how the beauty industry can take away the innocence of a child through the power and beauty campaigns.

Many of us would like to think we are independent and are not easily influenced, however, if you were to look at the hair, skin and make-up products you own, you would soon realise how affected and influenced you have been.

This advert combined with the Dove advert has really made me question how we view ourselves compared to how we should view ourselves and the reasoning behind this. I have now begun to think about my performance as a way to expose the differences between real and fake. Even female celebrities are scrutinised for looking ‘rough’ when they have no make-up on. If that is how they are treated for trying to be a ‘natural beauty’ then we cannot blame them for always wearing make-up when they step out of the house.
